Registration Underway for 21st annual Granville Hicks Leadership Academy for Laity and Clergy

Learn about “Reclaiming the Art of Preaching” during the Granville Hicks Leadership Academy for Laity and Clergy 2014 at Claflin University.
This 21st annual event will feature presentations by the Rev. Dr. Zan W. Holmes Jr., pastor emeritus of St. Luke Community United Methodist Church in Dallas, Texas; Dr. William Bobby McClain, professor of preaching and worship at Wesley Theological Seminary in Washington, D.C.; Claflin University President Dr. Henry N. Tisdale; and the Rev. Dr. Rosetta Ross, professor of religious studies at Spelman College in Atlanta.
The registration fee for the academy – set for Friday and Saturday, Jan. 31-Feb. 1, 2014 – is $100.
Registration will be held from 5 to 6:45 p.m. Jan. 31 on the James and Dorothy Z. Elmore Chapel, followed by the keynote address by Holmes at 7 p.m. in the Chapel.
Holmes served as senior pastor of St. Luke’s from 1979 to 2002. Before receiving master’s degrees in theology and sacred theology from Southern Methodist University’s Perkins School of Theology in Dallas, Holmes graduated cum laude from Huston-Tillotson University in Austin, Texas. In addition, he taught and mentored students and ministers for 24 years as an adjunct professor of preaching at the Perkins School of Theology.
As a community activist and leader, Holmes served in the Texas House of Representatives from 1968-1972 while serving as a United Methodist District Superintendent.
Holmes is the author of Reaching for Renewal(1991), Encountering Jesus(1992) and When Trouble Comes (1996). He is well-known as the narrator and host of the “Disciple I Bible Study” video series produced by Abingdon Press.
In 2002, the National Voting Rights Museum and Institute in Selma, Alabama, recognized Holmes as one of the civil rights movement’s “Invisible Giants.” He remains active as a life member of the NAACP, and lives with his wife, Carrie, in Dallas and Los Angeles, California.
A morning worship service will begin at 9:30 a.m. Feb. 1, followed by a panel discussion moderated by the Rev. Keyvon J. Amos, Claflin’s interim chaplain, at 10:45 a.m. A luncheon and lecture will be held at 12:30 p.m. Workshops will continue from 1:45 to 2:45 p.m., and the closing lecture is set for 3 p.m.
The Granville Hicks Leadership Academy honors the Rev. Dr. Granville A. Hicks, a 1957 Claflin graduate who has been recognized for his leadership as a pastor and district superintendent in the South Carolina Annual Conference of The United Methodist Church.
The purpose of the academy is to equip laity and clergy for ministry and leadership within the church. It works to empower individuals with biblical knowledge, intellectual growth and theological reflection, thus enhancing church development, renewal and mission outreach. It unites laity and clergy, establishes church leadership, increases awareness of the role of Christian education in the church, offers cross-cultural experiences within the church, and enhances the church-University relationship.
