CALA-Bash Brings out Best of Claflin’s Arts in 10-Day Celebration

It’s time for CALA-Bash – that’s Claflin’s Arts and Letters Annual Bash – on the campus of Claflin University! This year’s festivities will be held April 4-13, and the community is invited.
CALA-Bash is an artistic explosion that showcases art, dance, music, theater and poetry. This year’s 10-day festival begins Friday, April 4, with two performances of the Claflin University Theatre Ensemble’s production of “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom,” set for 7:30 p.m. at the BlueBird Theatre in downtown Orangeburg. Admission is free for Claflin students with an ID and $5 for the general public.
The play, by Pulitzer Prize-winning American playwright August Wilson, chronicles the 20th-century African-American experience. It will also be staged at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, April 5, and 3 and 7:30 p.m. Sunday, April 6, at the BlueBird.
CALA-Bash gets into full swing on Monday, April 7. That evening at 5, Claflin faculty will present their views on gun violence during a roundtable discussion at the Orangeburg County Library. And the Claflin University Wind Ensemble will present its spring concert at 7 p.m. in the W.V. Middleton Fine Arts Center Moss Auditorium.
Actor and Claflin alumnus Roger Mitchell will speak at 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 8, in Moss Auditorium. Mitchell’s roles include Chaff in “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire,” as well as parts in such TV shows and movies as “The Walking Dead,” “Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues," “Need for Speed,” “Nashville,” “Flight,” “NCIS,” “Diary of a Mad Black Woman” and many others.
That evening, check out the winners of the Claflin Mass Communications/AMA Film Festival at 6 in Moss Auditorium, followed by a Pulse Dance Company performance in the auditorium.
On Wednesday, April 9, a Word of Mouth Poetry Slam will be held at 7 p.m. in Ministers’ Hall.
A Student Art Exhibit Reception will be Thursday evening, April 10, at 5 in the Arthur Rose Museum, prior to the Claflin University Jazz Ensemble and Jazz Combo concert at 7 p.m. in Moss Auditorium.
Claflin will be Live on the Lawn with a full-day of outdoor performances, activities and vendors from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday, April 11, on Panther Plaza. At 7 p.m., make your way to Tullis Arena in the Jonas T. Kennedy Health and Physical Education Center for Sheryl Underwood’s College Foundation’s NPHC Stroll and Step Contest and Ultimate Battle of the DJs.
The Vendor’s Market will continue on Panther Plaza from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, April 12. And don’t miss Sheryl Underwood’s College Foundation’s Get Your Praise On HBCU Choir Sing-Off at 1 p.m. in Moss Auditorium.
A Worship Service on the Lawn featuring DREAM Gospel Choir in concert will conclude the 2014 CALA-Bash festivities at 9 a.m. Sunday, April 13.
