Claflin University Celebrates Honors College Week April 5-11

Claflin University will hold its 20th annual Honors College Week on Saturday, April 5, through Friday, April 11, on the campus of Claflin University. The series of events is a celebration of all Honors College students – past, present and future.

Saturday, April 5, is Honors College Community Service Day. On Sunday, April 6, a special Honors College worship service will be held in the James and Dorothy Z. Elmore Chapel.

Honors College seniors will present their theses on Monday and Tuesday, April 7 and 8, and Wednesday, April 9, is Honors College Mentor/Mentee Day.

On Thursday, April 10, the 20th annual Honors College Banquet will be held at 6 p.m. in the Jonas T. Kennedy Health and Physical Education Center’s Tullis Arena. The keynote speaker will be Maj. Tennille Jean-Paul, Honors College Class of 2000, who is currently stationed in Seattle, Washington. Attire for the banquet is semi-formal, and attendance is by invitation only. An RSVP is required.

The Honors College will participate in Market Day on Panther Plaza during Claflin’s Arts and Letters Annual Bash, or CALA-Bash, on Friday, April 11. Market Day serves as the Honors College’s Freshman Entrepreneur Day, during which eight freshman businesses will compete from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Honors College Week is a special time for graduating Honors College students, graduates from over the past 20 years and incoming freshmen honor students and their families. It highlights the accomplishments of honors students, and celebrates upcoming internships, study abroad opportunities, National Merit scholarships and awards, and more.

First Lady Alice Carson Tisdale, founder and director of the Alice Carson Tisdale Honors College, said the week is “a time of fellowship and a celebration of friendships.”

The Honors College will also introduce its new “Honor to Lead” campaign during Honors College Week. The campaign asks for each Honors College graduate to contribute $100 to an endowment to be used for the college. Tisdale said feedback for the campaign has been positive.
