University Closes Today at 5 p.m./Closed on Friday

Jan 20, 2022

The National Weather Service has predicted an ice storm/freezing rain beginning at 5 a.m. on Friday, January 21, 2022. Temperatures with wind chill during this time could reach the mid-teens with accumulations of ice up to a quarter of an inch.

In preparation for the weather event on Friday, University offices will close at 5 p.m. on Thursday, January 20, and in conjunction with the city and county will also close on Friday, January 21. Employees are asked to work remotely.

All classes will be conducted virtually on Friday, January 21. Students are encouraged to check Moodle for instructions from their professors.

Students from neighboring cities are encouraged to travel home, if possible, for the weekend. If power is lost during the ice storm, students who remain on campus will be housed safely in the Health and Wellness Complex.

All on-campus events have been postponed.

Please continue to look for updates from the Office of Communications and Marketing. Updates will be sent by email, posted on social media, and sent through the emergency text messaging service (Panther Alerts) to alert the Claflin family of when the University will reopen and when classes will resume. You may follow local media reports (WIS, WLTX or ABC Columbia) or the National Weather Service (https://www.weather.gov/cae/) for up-to-date news reports on the storm.
