A Message from the President

Jun 29, 2023

Dear Claflin University Community,

Today, the U.S. Supreme Court made a significant ruling that race cannot be a factor for admission in higher education. This decision, resulting from cases brought by Students for Fair Admissions against Harvard University and the University of North Carolina, has far-reaching implications and challenges the progress made through race-conscious admissions in fostering diversity, inclusion, and equity.

Established in 1869, Claflin University broke down barriers in higher education, making it the first South Carolina university open to all regardless of race. Currently, Claflin continues to welcome exemplary students of all races and genders who demonstrate a passion to change not only their own circumstances, but to change the world as well. Nonetheless, this ruling could potentially limit access to education for some individuals, especially Black students, restricting their freedom of educational choice.

For over five decades, affirmative action and race-conscious admissions have played a pivotal role in transforming colleges and universities into more racially diverse environments, fostering inclusive communities, and exposing students to a broader range of perspectives. This has led to a positive shift in educational experiences and the advancement of social progress which is why this is particularly concerning given the persistent racial inequalities and barriers in higher education that still exist or may revert, which was the very reason HBCUs were created in the first place.  As a historically Black institution, Claflin University understands the importance of diversity in all its forms. We are committed to providing an inclusive campus where all students have equal opportunities to thrive academically, intellectually, and socially, and we celebrate the power of diversity in creating a vibrant academic environment that prepares students for success in an increasingly interconnected world.

In light of this decision, we reaffirm our dedication to the principles of diversity, equity, and inclusion. Moving forward, let us continue to cultivate an environment where all individuals can reach their full potential, irrespective of their background.

Thank you for your dedication to Claflin University's vision of educational excellence and inclusivity.

Sincerely,

Dr. Dwaun Warmack
President
