ORANGBURG, S.C. (June 16, 2026) — Claflin University celebrated faith, servant leadership, and community impact during its 2026 Torchbearers Legacy Luncheon, on Tuesday, June 9, during the 2026 South Carolina United Methodist Church Annual Conference.
The special luncheon, organized by Claflin University Director of Church Relations Rev. Vivian R. Lingard, brought together clergy, alumni, church leaders, supporters, and community partners to honor individuals whose lives reflected faithful leadership, quiet service, steadfast commitment, and the enduring spirit of lifting others.
The keynote address was delivered by Rev. Dr. Calvin Alston, a 1979 Claflin graduate and retired district superintendent in the West Ohio Conference of the United Methodist Church. Rev. Alston encouraged attendees through reflections on leadership, service, faith, and perseverance.
During the luncheon, Claflin University presented the 2026 National Torchbearer Award to Dr. Crystal Banks, director of the General Board of Higher Education and Ministry’s Black College Fund. Banks was recognized for her distinguished leadership and unwavering commitment to strengthening United Methodist-related historically Black colleges and universities through advocacy, mentorship, partnership, and service.
The University also honored three 2026 Congregational Torchbearers for their faithful leadership and meaningful impact within their congregations and communities: Mrs. Elaine Harley, Dr. Kenneth Jenkins, and Ms. Earline Ulmer.
“At Claflin University, we believe deeply in honoring individuals who help others rise — often without recognition, fanfare, or reward” said Willie Jude II, Claflin University Vice President for Institutional Advancement. “Today’s honorees exemplify that spirit through lives of integrity, compassion, mentorship, generosity, and unwavering commitment to community.”
Proceeds of the luncheon were used to support need-based scholarships at Claflin University. Additional donations can be made at https://alumni.claflin.edu/2026-torchbearers-legacy-luncheon.
